Clay masks are known for its dirt, sebum, and gunk sucking abilities to cleanse our face and reveal brighter, clearer skin – but it’s also known for how drying it can sometimes be. The most famous clay mask in the ab market is probs the Innisfree Jeju volcanic clay mask (which i love and have used way before I started skincare and still use to this day). While I love it to bits, it can sometimes be overly drying if I use it too often and especially for dry skinned gals, clay masks can just be too drying for the skin to handle (one of the hacks for clay masks without being overly drying right here at my post).
well ladies and gentleman, introducing a super gentle non-drying clay mask right here! This MBD mask is a 2 step version which follows with a sheet mask after the clay mask. I first heard about this from Fiddy’s review of the utterly disgusting skin & lab glacial clay mask which almost killed my face but good to know I loved the MBD clay mask to bits.
So the first step and second step is easily detachable and instructions are clearly printed on the back. sadly the instructions are entirely in chinese and I am glad my mother forced me to put me through a chinese school for 17 years with sufficient knowledge to be able to somewhat read chinese characters. (Have I mentioned that by somewhat I mean I have a really hard time reading and figuring out chinese characters and nobody believes i was in a chinese school??) fear not, I’ll try to translate in english as much as my crappy chinese allows me to.

moisturizing, soothing, repairing.
Suitable skin types:
those who wish to cleanse and moisturize their skin, combination, dry or dehydrated skin types.
step 1: after your normal cleansing routine, apply the mud mask all over your face thinly and evenly avoiding the eye area. leave for about 10-15 minutes then cleanse face and apply step 2.
step 2: removing the plastic sheet from the sheet mask, leave the mask on for about 20-30 minutes. if there is any leftover essence gently rub all over face.
Step 1: Algae moisturizing mud mask (9ml)
it comes off as a white, pearl colored gooey texture and an unusually smooth consistency for a clay mask. I used my normal DIY mask brush to apply onto my face thinly and evenly and found myself having way more leftover after one layer, which led me to apply another layer until i used all of it up.
L: before R: after
it applies very smoothly, no lumps or dry cracks unlike usual clay masks I’ve tried. it feels very moisturizing and cooling when first applied as well. After leaving it on for around 12 minutes, i could see that the clay mask had slightly dried down to a sort of white, matte finish that was still slightly damp. then i cleansed my face and was immediately left with slightly brightened, smooth and moisturized skin. i could most definitely feel my face was clean without being dry but instead hydrated. i was already amazed by this point and was excited for step 2.
Step 2: Glacial water soothing repair mask (23ml)
Remove the plastic sheet attached to apply the silk, drenched in essence sheet mask onto your face. MBD sheet masks are generally slightly thinner than most masks but thicker than My scheming material.
well fit for my face and it smelled heavenly. It covered my face perfectly like most MBD sheet masks.
My face was brightened, well hydrated and had that subtle i slept for 8 hours straight with a full nighttime skincare routine glow. Really loved that well hydrated glow that is so hard to appear on my dull face. my face looked uh-may-zing and my usual tired, stressed and grumpy face was gone as if i was showered with love and bundles of cash.
- convenient packaging for travel
- easy to use
- not drying at all
- great for dry skin
- may be pricey as a clay mask in the long run
- not as strong and efficient as usual, harsh clay masks
Rating: 9.5/10, will repurchase
I genuinely enjoyed this 2 step mask from MBD and how moisturizing it is. it definitely is great for those with dry skin but wants to try clay masks without breaking their moisture barrier and suffering lethal consequences. This definitely defies the usual harsh clay masks as it is gentler, soothing and moisturizing. However, the cleansing effects (like pore size reduction) are most definitely not as evident as classic thicker clay masks. The sheet mask had great moisturizing and glowly results as well so I think this is most definitely a good thing to have in hand for emergencies or if you have a special occasion.
